Nokia was also able to use its rich patent portfolio to fill up its coffers and it got another $250 million payment from Microsoft in the quarter for using Windows Phone.

Nokia, for the first time in over 20 years will not be paying its dividend, which allows the company to improve its liquidity position.

Undoubtedly, Nokia is a long way behind its smartphone rivals, but with the stronger sales of its latest Lumia smartphones, the company seems to have put the worst behind it. For more than 20 years, Mark Post has raced over almost every sand dune, past every tumbleweed, and through every ravine of deepest Baja. And as the owner of Riviera Racing and 2007 champion of the Baja 1000, he knows what it takes to win in the dirt.

“Most people consider it the toughest motor sport race of any kind, because once that flag drops, it’s a thousand miles nonstop of war,” says Post. “And you need a battle plan. It’s a huge team effort.” During the race, Post and his navigator in the team’s trophy truck are supported by anywhere from 75 to 100 additional team members in stationary pits, two airplanes, a helicopter, and six roving chase vehicles. “The chase vehicles are loaded with spares and parts, whatever our race truck might need, strategically moving around the racecourse. The airplanes help us relay information between the truck and the team members. The helicopter is there for safety purposes.”

Coordinating such a large crew in a remote area requires tight logistical planning. Riviera Racing used to plot their strategy by cross-referencing a hodgepodge of paper maps, charts, and checklists. But now, using the MotionX GPS HD app on iPad, the team is able to load the exact route of the racecourse on a detailed satellite map. Then they overlay the information they need — pit stops, driver changes, refueling locations, and access roads for support vehicles. And they insert thousands of course notes gathered from running each mile of the course in the weeks leading up to the race.

MAKING OF: Here are the 5 steps, in order, to make this one marvelous gem of a photo.
Level 1 – We start with a photo of the Dark Grey Nokia N8 (let’s call him dgN8) taken by the Silver N8 (sN8).

Level 2 – Then, we display this picture on the sN8, and we take a photo of that with the dgN8.

Level 3 – We display that one on the dgN8 and we shoot it with the sN8.

Level 4 – Again, we open that image on the sN8 and we take a photo with the dgN8.

Level 5 – And ultimately, with the sN8, we take a photo of the dgN8 displaying that last picture.

It’s poetic. It’s transcending. It’s… Oh well, it makes me ache to have the 5 colors of the N8 so I could put them all inside each other. If anyone has the 5 colors at hand, please do it Or if someone at Nokia wants to send me the 5 colors to do it, then I really don’t mind
Note: I did try to go to the 6 and 7 N8s levels, but ultimately I was beaten by the resolution of the screen, you can’t go past the 5 N8s with the screen still being able to show them all. Too bad.
