Google Samsung enter global patent cross licensing agreement
The deal covers patents currently owned by the companies, as well as any filed in the next 10 years, the companies said in a release. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The companies said the deal "would lead to deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future projects."
"By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation," said Allen Lo, deputy general counsel for patents at Google, in a statement.
Samsungs Seungho Ahn, head of the companys intellectual property center, said the deal showed "the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes."
The companies have been at the center of the smartphone patent wars, though more as allies than foes. The majority of the litigation - which has sprawled across three continents, has been between Apple and the various companies involved in making smartphones based on Googles Android software, including Samsung and Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility.
Notably, Qualcomm last week said it had acquired patents once owned by smartphone maker Palm from Hewlett-Packard for an undisclosed amount.
Qualcomm says the purchase covers 1,400 U.S. patents and about 1,000 more foreign patients for the companys mobile computing technology.
Hewlett-Packard Co. paid $1 billion for Palm in 2010 as part of its first foray into tablet computers and smartphones, which ran on Palms operating system. The effort flopped and HP now sells tablets using Google Inc.s Android and a recently introduced version of Microsoft Corp.s Windows. Palo Alto, California-based HP hasnt re-entered the smartphone market.

Rumor Samsung Looking to announce the Galaxy Gear 2 and Galaxy Band at Mobile World Congress in February
Samsung doesn’t normally announce any new products at CES or Mobile World Congress. Normally, Samsung holds their own Unpacked event for their larger devices, like the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines. In fact, at Mobile World Congress this year (2013), Samsung handed out invites to their Unpacked event in March to announce the Galaxy S4. However, this year it looks like Samsung is looking to hit Barcelona hard! We’ve seen many leaks and patent filings that lead us to believe that Samsung is going to be announcing the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Galaxy Band in Barcelona this year.
According to Lee Seung-woo who is an analyst at IBK Securities, “Samsung is currently working on the Galaxy Gear 2, and the product will be surely released early next year.” There’s also another close source to Samsung, who is speaking anonymously, which told The Korean Herald that Samsung is working on bringing the Galaxy Gear 2 under spotlight at Mobile World Congrsss in Barcelona.
So far the specs of both the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Galaxy Band are not confirmed, and we really haven’t heard much about either one. I reckon that the Galaxy Band is going to be similar to the Fitbit Flex or the Fitbit Force. While the Galaxy Gear 2 will still be more of a smartwatch. Although I kind of hope they get rid of the camera. It looks kind of odd to me where it’s placed. But maybe that’s just me. Hopefully we’ll learn more about the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Galaxy Band pretty soon. Maybe even a flexible display on these two new devices? It certainly would be awesome to have.
How many of you are excited for the Galaxy Gear 2 or the Galaxy Band? Let us know in the comments below.
